Libya has been a hotbed for radical Islamic militants and has recently become so chaotic that the Obama administration chose to evacuate American diplomats this past month. Islamic militants reported they "secured" the Tripoli American Embassy on August 31, 2014. Pictures of the militants swimming in the pool and "partying" at the compound have circulated on social media sites.
American intelligence reports suggest Islamic militants took control of almost a dozen commercial airliner jets during the month of August, after they took control of Tripoli International Airport. Western intelligence agencies have since warned that the jets could be used in 9/11 style terrorist attacks across northern Africa.
One U.S. official said, "There are a number of commercial airliners in Libya that are missing. We found out on September 11 what can happen with hijacked planes."
A senior State Department official declined to comment on the situation and claimed, "We can't confirm that," about the missing jets.
Egyptian officials have voiced a growing concern that the the oil-rich nation could become a "hotbed for developing terrorists." Egypt may intervene, militarily, in the coming months. The militants in Libya reportedly have connections to al-Qaeda.
