Mount Ontake, in central Japan, erupted on Saturday initially leaving over 250 hikers stranded and 30 dead. Mount Ontake is a popular destination for hikers and boasts an elevation of 10,062 feet. The volcano last erupted in 1979.

Most of the 250 stranded hikers made their way down the slope by Saturday night. An anonymous Japanese police official claims that up to 30 of the initial 45 missing people were found dead. The volcano left up t0 20 inches of ash covering the ground.
