The Ebola outbreak is leading to rioting and unrest in Liberia as the military attempts to quarantine citizens to impede the spread of the virus. A curfew and quarantine has been imposed on 75,000 citizens in the WestPoint slum area. Police have reportedly beat citizens with batons and shot live rounds to keep people in the slums from breaking out of the area.
Liberians in WestPoint believe the government is keeping them in the area as a way to protect citizens who are more privileged and live in the capital. A barb wire fence has been set up to keep people in the area. Citizens have fought back by throwing rocks at the officers and have attempted to tear the fence down to escape the quarantine area. Ebola has killed over 1,350 people in West Africa. Experts believe the epidemic is far worse than what is being reported.
